The Best Dressed List: a Cannes farewell...

kirsten dunst cannes

Hip hip hooray for the ever-lovely Kirsten Dunst who polished off the Cannes celebration by scooping the prestigious best actress accolade this weekend. Woop! During the closing ceremony at Palais des Festivals, Robert De Niro presented Kirsten with the Prix de l’Interpretation Feminine Award for her role in Melancholia, and doesn’t she look like a worthy winner, swathed as she is in a frothy skirt topped off with a shimmering bodice? Well, hell YES!

The Chanel gown from Karl’s S/S ‘10 Couture catwalk is the ideal clincher after the trail of jaw-dropping floor-sweepers we've been treated to. It’s shimmering and glam, fluffy and floaty, but in the perfect Dunst-ey way. Granted, those black pointy Valentino heels may be a tad er, witchy but we like to see a touch of trademark quirk from our Kiki-D so we’ll let her off. All in all, a total triumph.

Uma Thurman was amongst the jurors who deemed Kirsten to be Cannes 2011’s best actress, so of course she was at the ceremony looking as statuesque as ever. Her electric blue Armani PrivĂ© gown with a mermaid style train and rhinestone embellishments provides the kind of gracefully minimalism that we’ve come to expect from the actress. We think it’s tres Victoria Beckham, non? Oh, and we’re mightily pleased to see her ditching the flats for a pair of wicked silver heels.

As our Cannes surveillance comes to an end, we finish off with a couple of show-stoppers who couldn’t possibly slip through our Best Dressed net. Firstly, Claudia Schiffer made a welcome red carpet return for the This Must Be The Place premiere and the saucy black lace in a corset stylee equals another Chanelclassic, adorned with a smattering of glitzy gems.

And from smiling at the familiar to gasping at the unexpected, Gwen Stefani joined Claudia at the premiere looking like a total knock-out. Her white silk gown with a black asymmetrical strap is an Armani PrivĂ© creation and what a refreshing sight it is. As for what’s going on above the neckline, that superhero-esque bouff teamed with dramatic smokey eyes, plus a slick of red lippy, could result in Essex overkill but as ever, Gwen pulls it off with a-plomb. What a winning week she's had, eh?

So as Cannes comes to a close and we say farewell to palm tree-lined red carpets and gowns sparkling under the Mediterranean sun *wipes tear from eye*, we call on you, dear readers, to cast your final Cannes vote of 2011. Do make it a good’un…
